Coming and going |
|
|
We must know where you are at all times.
You may not leave school without permission.
|

A |
|
If you are driving or cycling
to school, you must STOP at the railway line, give way for buses, and must not
exceed 20 KPH in school grounds. After school no pedestrian or cyclist is to
exit via the main gate, and no cyclist is to cycle down the avenue.

B |
|
You must arrive at school by 8.45. If you
arrive late you must sign in at the school office before going to class or
assembly. If you are continually late without good reason you will be
placed on Rubbish Duty.

C |
|
If you need to leave during the school day
for an appointment, or because you have become sick, you must gain permission at
the school office, and then sign out. If you are sick the Attendance Officer
will contact your parents. If you return to school that day you must sign back
in again.

D |
|
If you wish to go home for
lunch you must obtain a lunch pass (from the Attendance Officer).
|
|
E |
|
If you are absent, the
Attendance Officer must be telephoned as soon as possible with an explanation.
If you are absent from school without an explanation, or for a reason that we do
not approve of, you will be regarded as truant. The school will inform your
parents, and, depending upon the seriousness of the truancy, the North Otago
Truancy Officer. You will have to make up double the time you were truant for.

|
Approved reasons for absence are
generally ill-health, bereavement, driving test and medical appointment. The
following are not approved reasons for absence:

Holiday Assisting parents at home or work
If you want special leave from school you must
apply in writing to the Rector.

|
If you wish to drive to school
you must obtain a vehicle pass (from the Senior Master).
|
|
H |
|
You may not ride in another student’s car without
written permission from your parent and the parent of the car owner, to be given
to the Senior Master.
You should proceed directly home from school, and
not loiter in public places.
|

Appearance |
|
|
We expect high standards
of uniform and general appearance. These show pride in yourself and in your
school. Your uniform will regularly be checked at assembly, at the gate and in
classrooms.

A |
|
You must wear school uniform, and wear it
correctly. Your socks must be up, shoes polished, and if you wear a
T-shirt under your school shirt it must not show. Your shorts should be no
longer than the knee.
If your shoes are not polished you will be
placed on Rubbish Duty
|

B |
|
If you need to wear a non-uniform item of clothing,
for health reasons, or because part of your uniform is being fixed or replaced,
you must take a note from a parent/guardian to the Deputy Rector to obtain a
uniform pass before Period One.
If you do not, the non-uniform item may be
confiscated and given to the Deputy Rector. It will be returned only after
receipt of a signed note from your parent/guardian.
If your uniform is quite unsatisfactory you
will be sent to the Deputy Rector.

C |
|
You must be clean-shaven. If
you have sideboards they must not extend beyond your ear lobes. Your hair may
be any length but must be neat and tidy. Hair must be of a natural colour and
extreme styles are not allowed.

D |
|
You may not wear facial studs
or rings, including tongue studs. You may wear jewellery or taonga only for
cultural reasons and with the Rector’s written permission.
|

Prohibited areas |
|
A |
|
All buildings before 8.45
a.m., at interval and lunchtime, except in wet weather or with a teacher’s
permission.
|
|
B |
|
The hostel (to day boys).
|
|
C |
|
The native shrubbery areas by
the railway line and behind the social centre.
|
|
D |
|
The foreshore and farm areas,
and areas on the perimeter of the back field that can not be seen from the back
field.
|
|
E |
|
The swimming pool, unless under adult supervision.
If you are found in an out-of-bounds area
without good reason you will be placed on Rubbish Duty. |

Prohibited behaviour and items For your own safety and the safety of others,
some objects and activities are completely prohibited |
|
|
You must not:
|
|
A |
|
possess or use cigarettes,
matches or cigarette lighter, alcohol, illegal drugs, weapons or pornographic
material. These items will automatically be
confiscated. Use of alcohol, illegal drugs or weapons is likely to result in
suspension. Possession is likely to result in stand down. Use of cigarettes
will result in two weeks of after school detention for a first offence and stand
down for a second offence. Possession of pornography or being in the company of
a student using alcohol or cigarettes is likely to result in one week of after
school detention.

|
access, download or send any
pornographic, violent or abusive material on the school computer system.
|
|
|
engage in verbal abuse, foul
language, bullying, fighting, gambling, harassment, physical assault, vandalism
or theft. This behaviour is regarded as serious, and may lead to your being
stood down or suspended from the school
|
|
|
drop litter or spit on the
ground. If you do this you will be placed on Rubbish
Duty.
|
|
B |
|
Expensive personal equipment –
i.e. a camera, cellphone or walkman – is brought to the school at your own
risk. The school will not be responsible for damage or loss.
|
|
C |
|
Cellphones are not to be used or to be left on
during class, assembly or any other meeting.
A cellphone that rings, or is used for a
call or for sending or receiving a text message during class or assembly will be
confiscated and returned upon receipt of a parent’s note. |
|
D |
|
Skateboards can be brought
only with the Rector’s written permission, and are to be used at lunchtimes only
on the Tennis Courts.
|
|
E |
|
If you damage something -
intentionally or accidentally – you should report this immediately to the Deputy
Rector. Damage may have to be paid for.
|
|
F |
|
Staff are to be treated with respect outside the
school, as well as inside.
Abusive language or gestures towards staff out of
school will be regarded as a serious school offence and may be reported to the
police. |

5 |
Information and Communications Technology |
|
|
Computers have rules and protocols that must be
observed. You must not:
|
|
A |
|
Lend your user name or
password to others, or use another person’s name or password.
|
|
B |
|
Steal someone else’s work, or
break copyright laws.
|
|
C |
|
Use racist, obscene or abusive
language or send inflammatory messages.
|
|
D |
|
Use the school network for
sending a large number of personal messages.
|
|
E |
|
Introduce a computer virus
into the network.
|
|
F |
|
Access any sites or areas that would be offensive
to any students, teachers or parents.
If you break any of these rules you may lose your
access to ICT at the school, and you may invite other punishments also. |

6 |
Commitments |
|
|
Some activities involve a commitment that you are
expected to honour.
|
|
A |
|
When you join a subject class,
you must enter for the qualification the class is being prepared for. The
Rector’s permission is needed to withdraw from a qualification or an
examination.
|
|
B |
|
When you join a sports team you must practice and
play for that team whenever required. If you are unable to do this, you
must tell the coach or manager before you join. Subs must be paid
before the season starts. If you miss a practice without good reason you will
not play that week. If you miss a game without good reason you will be
dropped from the team. |
|
C |
|
When you join a cultural group
you must attend all rehearsals and performances as required.
|
|
D |
|
Each year, before having access to
the school computer network you and your parent/guardian must sign an Acceptable
Use Policy form, and agree to abide by its standards
|

CLASSROOM RULES |
|
|
Starting the period |
|
|
Arrive on time.-----Line up
quietly----Enter in silence.----Immediately take out all equipment needed for
the lesson, including your homework diary.----Immediately start the work on the
board.
|
|
|
During the period |
|
|
Work hard.----Do not call
out. Raise your hand if you wish to speak to the teacher or the class.----Do
not talk, unless allowed to.----Copy the homework into your diary. |

|
You may not |
|
|
Use a cellphone or walkman in the classroom.----Ask
for a ‘toilet break’. Do this in your own time.----Eat or chew (but you
may drink from water bottles, except in computer labs).

|
If you can not follow these
rules you will be referred out of the classroom. |
