School Rules

 School Rules

These rules apply to all situations where you are: at school, or travelling between home and school, or at a school function or activity, including overseas trips, or anywhere, in school uniform.

1   Coming and going

We must know where you are at all times.  You may not leave school without permission.

A   If you are driving or cycling to school, you must STOP at the railway line, give way for buses, and must not exceed 20 KPH in school grounds.   After school no pedestrian or cyclist is to exit via the main gate, and no cyclist is to cycle down the avenue.
B

You must arrive at school by 8.45.  If you arrive late you must sign in at the school office before going to class or assembly.
If you are continually late without good reason you will be placed on Rubbish Duty.

C   If you need to leave during the school day for an appointment, or because you have become sick, you must gain permission at the school office, and then sign out.  If you are sick the Attendance Officer will contact your parents.  If you return to school that day you must sign back in again.
D   If you wish to go home for lunch you must obtain a lunch pass (from the Attendance Officer).
E   If you are absent, the Attendance Officer must be telephoned as soon as possible with an explanation.
If you are absent from school without an explanation, or for a reason that we do not approve of, you will be regarded as truant.  The school will inform your parents, and, depending upon the seriousness of the truancy, the North Otago Truancy Officer.  You will have to make up double the time you were truant for.
F   Approved reasons for absence are generally ill-health, bereavement, driving test and medical appointment.  The following are not approved reasons for absence:

Physiotherapy
Driving lesson
Employment Holiday
Assisting parents at home or work

If you want special leave from school you must apply in writing to the Rector.

G   If you wish to drive to school you must obtain a vehicle pass (from the Senior Master).
H

You may not ride in another student’s car without written permission from your parent and the parent of the car owner, to be given to the Senior Master.

You should proceed directly home from school, and not loiter in public places.

2 Appearance
We expect high standards of uniform and general appearance.  These show pride in yourself and in your school. Your uniform will regularly be checked at assembly, at the gate and in classrooms.
A

You must wear school uniform, and wear it correctly.  Your socks must be up, shoes polished, and if you wear a T-shirt under your school shirt it must not show.  Your shorts should be no longer than the knee.

If your shoes are not polished you will be placed on Rubbish Duty

B

If you need to wear a non-uniform item of clothing, for health reasons, or because part of your uniform is being fixed or replaced, you must take a note from a parent/guardian to the Deputy Rector to obtain a uniform pass before Period One.

If you do not, the non-uniform item may be confiscated and given to the Deputy Rector. It will be returned only after receipt of a signed note from your parent/guardian.

If your uniform is quite unsatisfactory you will be sent to the Deputy Rector.

C   You must be clean-shaven.  If you have sideboards they must not extend beyond your ear lobes.  Your hair may be any length but must be neat and tidy.  Hair must be of a natural colour and extreme styles are not allowed.
D   You may not wear facial studs or rings, including tongue studs.  You may wear jewellery or taonga only for cultural reasons and with the Rector’s written permission.
3 Prohibited areas
A   All buildings before 8.45 a.m., at interval and lunchtime, except in wet weather or with a teacher’s permission.

B   Expensive personal equipment – i.e. a camera, cellphone or walkman – is brought to the school at your own risk.  The school will not be responsible for damage or loss.
C

Cellphones are not to be used or to be left on during class, assembly or any other meeting.

A cellphone that rings,  or is used for a call or for sending or receiving a text message during class or assembly will be confiscated and returned upon receipt of a parent’s note.

F

Staff are to be treated with respect outside the school, as well as inside.

Abusive language or gestures towards staff out of school will be regarded as a serious school offence and may be reported to the police.

You must not:

A   Lend your user name or password to others, or use another person’s name or password.

If you break any of these rules you may lose your access to ICT at the school, and you may invite other punishments also.

6 Commitments

Some activities involve a commitment that you are expected to honour.

A   When you join a subject class, you must enter for the qualification the class is being prepared for.  The Rector’s permission is needed to withdraw from a qualification or an examination.
B

When you join a sports team you must practice and play for that team whenever required.  If you are unable to do this, you must tell the coach or manager before you join.
Subs must be paid before the season starts.
If you miss a practice without good reason you will not play that week.  If you miss a game without good reason you will be dropped from the team.
