Before You Arrive

 Before You Come Here

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We require a transcript of the student's latest school report. We will not enrol a student whose report shows that he has been lazy or badly behaved. There are no specific language entry requirements. If a student's English is very limited he will initially spend much of his time in ESOL classes until his English has improved.

If you need help to evaluate the Students English Skills, you may request from us a basic English vocabulary test, in your language. Once the test has been sat, you may return it to us for evaluation by our ESOL department.

HOW TO OBTAIN A VISA AND ENROL AT WAITAKI BOYS'

  1. Read about the school on our web site, or ask us to post you the relevant information. Please feel free to contact us to gain any further information you may require about the school and hostel.

  2. Complete an Enrolment Form and Contract, including Health Report, and Student Response, and send this to us with a copy of your son's latest school report.

  3. If your son is accepted we will then invoice you for tuition and boarding fees for the remainder of the school year.

  4. When the fees have been deposited in our account we will send you an Offer of Place. You can use this to gain a student visa.

  5. When you have confirmed your son's travel arrangements, complete and send to us the Arrival Information Form. This will enable us to collect your son from Christchurch airport.

We will process your application promptly, and it is usually possible for the whole enrolment process to be completed in a few weeks. Any delays usually occur in the processing of visa applications.

The visa is granted for attendance at this school only. If your son leaves this school for another he must seek the permission of the NZ Immigration Service first.

REFUNDS POLICY

  1. All fees for school and hostel/home-stay will be payable in advance, and will cover the remainder of the school year.

  2. The school will not accept International Students who are not fee payers, unless they reside in the school's traditional catchment area.

Hostel and Home-stay

  1. The school policy for refund of hostel or home-stay fees shall also apply to International Students:

If a student leaves the hostel before the end of the school year, the Board may continue to charge fees for 28 days from the day that written notice of the student's withdrawal from the hostel is received, regardless of whether or not the student resides in the hostel during that period.

    (Policy 4.1.3 Point 60)

Tuition Fees

  1. If an enrolment is cancelled before a student arrives, tuition fees shall be refunded in full, minus the enrolment fee.

  2. Once a student has completed 10 days of study at the school there will be no refund of tuition fees other than in circumstances deemed by the Board of Trustees to be exceptional. These include:
    1. Serious illness of close relative in home country
    2. Serious illness of student

Where a refund is granted it shall consist of no more than (but may, at the Board's discretion, be less than) full tuition fees for the remainder of the period that they have been paid for, minus:
    1. an administration charge of $300
    2. 28 days fees
    3. the proportion of the Government Levy on the fee that the school has already paid.

  3. No fees shall be refunded to a student who
    1. has been excluded or expelled by the Board of Trustees, or
    2. intends, after leaving Waitaki Boys', to study at another school in New Zealand, or
    3. has enrolled as a fee payer and subsequently gains Permanent Residence

  4. There shall be no refund of tuition or hostel fees if a student is temporarily suspended from school or hostel by the Board of Trustees.

MEDICAL , TRAVEL AND FEES PROTECTION INSURANCE

Medical and Travel Insurance

International Students are not entitled to free health care in New Zealand unless they are

  • a resident or citizen of Australia, or
  • a citizen of New Zealand, or
  • the holder of a temporary permit that is valid for two years or more.

Therefore for all students not in one of the above categories, Medical Insurance is compulsory.

Students must also insure their personal effects, as they are not included in Hostel and Home-stay insurance.

Fees Protection Insurance

The school is required to ensure that all students' fees are protected in the event that the school is unable to continue to offer tuition to International Students, or in the event that a student is required to return home or is transferred to another institution.

All International Students attending Waitaki Boys' are required to take comprehensive insurance for

  • health
  • travel
  • personal effects
  • fees protection.

The Unicare comprehensive policy is government approved as meeting these needs. It guarantees under Section B Additional Expenses, Section 4 1 (d) cover for students due to 'the unforseen insolvency, regulatory closure or withdrawal of accreditation of any education provider'. Unicare also offer a Family Emergency Travel benefit. For more detail:

WHAT ELSE SHOULD YOU BRING?

You may bring any personal items you wish that are legal. There are also no restrictions on items purchased in New Zealand.

Items brought with them by International Students can include:

  • Lap tops
  • Sports Gear
  • Sound systems
  • Personal music players
  • Cellphone
  • Small TV
  • Skateboard

It is good to bring some personal items (favourite books or CDs, family photos etc).

The student will probably need to purchase some warmer clothing for winter, such as a thick jacket, once in Oamaru.

ARRIVAL TIME

New students may arrive at any time of the year. Students who arrive mid-year have the advantage of being able to study for a term or two and 'find their feet' in a modified individual programme that will prepare them for a full year-long course the following year.

The new educational qualification, NCEA, makes it easier for students who arrive mid- year or later to still gain some qualifications in that year, although students who arrive late can not expect to gain all the credits that are available.

Returning students must arrive in time for the start of every term. Flights should be booked well in advance. Returning students who arrive after the school year has commenced can not be guaranteed the subjects of their choice.

Providing the Arrival Information reaches us three days before the student's arrival, he will be collected from his airport of arrival (usually Christchurch). We are also happy to collect other family members who may be travelling with the student, and to arrange accommodation in Oamaru.
